Internship Project: Horatio Hathaway's Voyage

Between Dec. 2016 and May 2017 I was an intern in the Digital Initiatives Department of the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Working with my supervisor, Michael Lapides, I created an Esri Story Tour based on a logbook kept by Horatio Hathaway on his voyage from New York to China and back in 1850-1851.  The logbook is located at the NB Whaling Museum.

The project combines data taken from the daily entries made in the ship Horatio's logbook, historical documents and maps, images, and other information found in print and on the web to create a historical GIS of one man's experience.

The map of Horatio's voyage and associated logbook entries was created in ArcMap. Historic maps and charts were georeferenced and digitized, and hyperlinks lead to additional resources.  The project is incomplete at present - much more remains to be done.
